Perth Town Hall Debate

It’s happening Tuesday 26th Feb 2013.

West Australians want to participate in their democracy and West TV is giving you chance to ask the important questions. The voters of Western Australia, have the right to know the answers to our questions before we vote in the upcoming election.

Be at the Perth Town Hall on Barrack Street, Perth on Tuesday 26th February. You will be able to listen to and ask questions to some of the candidates in the WA State Election.

It’s unscripted, unrehearsed and will be broadcast LIVE on free to air television

Expect to hear from people like:

Ben Wyatt – Labor
TBC – Liberal
Terry Redman – Nationals
Lynn McLaren – Greens
Greg Ross – Independent
Kevin Morgan – Independent

The live broadcast starts on WTV from 7pm so please arrive at 6:30 pm.

You can come to participate or just be part of the live audience.

We are disappointed that Mark McGowan has made numerous commitments in the Media to attend the Town Hall but as far as we know, at this point in time he will not be attending.

Have a listen to this audio from 6PR on Thursday, 21 February.

Late Night Perth

Starts Friday, October 12

Demographic: 25-54 yr olds.
Timeslot: Late Evening 10pm-1am Fridays
Talent: Jason Jordan – Technology Commentator and 6PR Presenter & Paul Cook – 96fm Presenter and Musician.

Real music. Adult issues. Live & local. Giving Perth’s late night audience a chance to take part in fun & engaging discussions, competitions and topical events. Enjoy some real music too – whether it’s something old or something new.

Late Night Perth is Internet-savvy and will be hooking into social media, popular culture, current jokes and internet memes. We’ll get experts in to talk about the grown-up subjects. As it’s late night, it might be a hooker, an ex-prisoner or a guest from a band we all love (or love to hate).

But one thing is for sure, it will always be challenging and edgy!

Fast paced & provocative, Late Night Perth is for people who are heading out to party, those working nights, driving, working in the shed, goofing around on the Internet or who just want to get away from the TV for a change. It is not radio for kids or oldies.

The program will be ‘interactive’, with a very strong social media component – people will be able to join in the conversation by Twitter/Facebook/Phone/Email.

Both presenters have 4 young kids and hectic lives, they relate very well to the Gen X and Gen Y demos. Both presenters are also very engaged with social media, popular culture & current affairs. Both like to push boundaries and take on new challenges.

There was no late night, edgy, provocative, fun radio in Perth.

There were no Gen X local personalities in late night Perth Radio.

There will be from Friday, October 12 2012 at 10pm.

Jason & Paul are also hosts of #thebuzz, Australia’s first and only Social Media TV Show broadcast weekly on West TV and streamed globally over the Internet.

PCGURU Robbed

My business PCGURU was robbed today by two bozos.

They took off with a customer’s laptop. This is a photo of Bozo #1 – the one who grabbed the laptop.

Watch closely as Bozo #2 takes what appears to be a screwdriver from his sock as these two numbnuts enter our premises.

He then wields it as he checks out two empty rooms.

I am very grateful that my staff did not directly come into conflict with these two scumbags.

Hopefully this footage, the Police and Social Media means we’ll catch these cretins in short order.

If you recognise the perps, let me know.

Update 1: 1930hrs Same Day: I have been sent a message on Social Media with the full name of the perp in the photo. I will check it out with the Police tomorrow. If it’s correct, score one for the power of Social Media!

Update 2: 1130hrs Day 2: Police have visited the premises and watched the CCTV Video. The Offenders are “well-known” to Police. We are now waiting on them to get back to us to see if we can get the customer’s laptop back. 2 Women called through to PCGURU saying they spotted them. One at a bus stop in St. James and the other who saw them walking in the northern part of Vic Park. A guy contacted me on Twitter saying he had a flat tire on his bicycle and was fixing it up near the Broken Hill Pub when they walked past.

Update 3: 1300hrs Day 3: Had a person add personal details about the PCGURU Robbers to the Youtube Video and I received a phone call from a guy who sees them daily. My General Manager took a call at work from someone who provided the pictured Bozo’s home address on Canning Hwy. Information has been forwarded to Police. Have also had some interest from one of the Commercial TV Networks at doing a story on this.

Update 4: 0800hrs Day 4: Spoke to Graham Mabury on 6PR’s Nightline last night after 11pm. Surprised to watch the site visitors blip enormously! Well over 100 visitors in a matter of minutes all of whom watched both videos. In good news, we’ve spoken to the owner of the laptop and he is sympathetic to the theft. It wasn’t a cheap laptop though. We had the replacement valued at $3800 just for the laptop, never mind all the software. If ever there was an argument for having good offsite backups!

Update 5: 0930hrs Day 4: We’ve had 4 Police come through so far this morning. 2 came early and collected the CCTV footage (again). Then another two arrived with more questions and to view the CCTV footage (again). It seems that if the Reception Door had have been open this would be classified as “robbery”. If they opened the door, it’s “burglary” and that is a more serious offence. It’s clear from the footage – from 2 separate angles – that the door was opened. Nothing has been said about the apparent wielding of a screwdriver yet.  The task has been escalated from Kensington to a higher level Crime Squad and as I now understand it, a warrant has been issued. One of the Police we spoke to has expressed frustration that the pictured bozo gets arrested regularly and yet is always back committing more petty crimes. Looks like a failure with our Judicial System.

Geek Speak is LIVE!

It's taken a little while since the pilot – and we're already filming Episode 7, but at last the first episodes of Geek Speak are available for viewing.

This is an iiNet sponsored production made right here in Perth that aims to demystify some of the more terrifying elements of technology – and we have a bit of fun doing it!

The team consists of Ryan (who'll you hear as my replacement on 6PR's Computer Guru Segment), Tiang (who works at iiNet) and Me along with a few other guest presenters.

Check out Episodes 1 & 2 here: http://freezone.iinet.net.au/channels/freezone/iinet/geek-speak

I'd be really interested in your feedback – good and bad!

People want Tech Talkback!

Here's some excerpts from emails I've received since Friday 6 August. That's 19 emails in 3 days.

The people have spoken!

It seems they want someone who can solve technology problems on the radio as well as also doing something on TV.

Now of course, Ryan is doing a sterling job in my place on @6PR – but everyone has a different way of approaching problem solving. I'm pretty sure there's room for two.

Let's see if we can get @720perth interested!

What do you think? Add your comments below.

I must admit I miss your tech segments on 6PR. There are not many radio segments I try to take in as a matter of course, but yours was/is definitely one.  The 6PR talkback aspect was good coz it gave air to a wide range of problems, which I found good to learn from.

Whilst I am an Apple man, the rest of my family are Windows based, and I am the one who has to sort their problems for them. Coz of you, we are Trend based now….

Would definitely prefer a radio slot by you as it would be more practicable for me as compared to TV.  Thus assuming 6PR is finished for you now, I would think approaching the ABC for talkback would be the way to go, but not sure how commercial reality would affect your ability to recommend brands and stuff.
Rob McDonald

I support the idea of you conducting a full half hour and I mean a FULL HALF HOUR of both tech talk and talkback to people with problems or confusion about the operation of their pc's.

It would be a great deal better to have this segment on the radio during the working week and during working hours, the less than 15 minutes that James Lush gives you on a Sat morning is hardly worth it.

I am prepared to email this to the ABC and to West TV.
John Bryant

I would LOVE to see you back on radio and hope the ABC could see the value of this to their station and ratings, I use to look forward to your talkback shows and would gladly tune in to ABC radio for your show,,I do not normally tune into ABC radio but would do so if you where on it.
Cathy Warger

i think u should go for the phone in idea on west tv
Scott & Amanda

Love to see a talk back on West TV, but would email 720 if needed.
Glennys Fragomeni

I would like to see a tech help session in any media. My own interest is in Linux variants and discussion on these would be especially welcomed by me.
Brian Steele

I really miss you on 6pr. Looking forward to having you on somthing on tv.
Brian Mitchell

I am still in shock that you left 6pr. You said that at the ABC, they would give you more freedom for exploring your radio image.

This, to me hasn't happened. I loved hearing your advice and your no-nonsense approach to tech issues.

I want you back in a regular spot, 6pr or ABC. Doesn't matter.

T.V. ?? On the weekend yes but during the week, were all at work and don't watch the box.

You have my full support for a twice weekly show during the week and a spot on the weekend.

The world is moving forward and to keep up, we have to know what there is to know and you always gave us that up to date advice.

We need you back. At all cost's. How about a live web-cam every weekend where we can log in and enjoy.
Gerrit Braun

In my opinion the best way to answer question and demonstrate visually on how to go about solving computer problems is via the TV programme.
John Delborrello

I would definately watch a TV show on computers, how to advice, new technology, problem solving and related issues .

There is nothing like it on TV and the format would be perfect for everyone who uses a computer or is interested in technology.

You could have an advice section via viewer emails, guest experts and a new product slot.

The only show like it would be 'Cybershack' but channel nine seems to put that show on and off air at their whim if it is still on the air at all.
J Fulton

I would like a TV Talkback Segment.
Cilla W.

My 2 cents. Definately include mobile technology in a tech talk segment. I'm not just talking Blackberry but rather all mobile internet, social networking and email.
Greg Myers

I’d prefer to hear you back on 6pr (and I’ve let them know too!)
I really miss your segments, very informative and interesting and I’ve learnt a lot listening to you!
Rhonda Gittos

A Tech Help segment should return to radio.
Robert Barham

I for one, would like a tech support show on the ABC, or where ever, I'm a bit of a Techie, and miss listening to you on air, I have picked  up a few skills from these shows.

I do think a show on channel 44 would work, just a matter of  getting people to rescan there TVs, so they at least have the channel, then get the word out that the show exists, the potential for such a show would be huge (well I believe so), hope it all works out, if I can help,I sure will……..
Rod Moss

I think it's a great idea having a Tech Help segment.  Even better to have it on TV so that when you are talking about something tangible like external drives, mother boards or ram and loads of other bits, you will be able to show us oldies what the hell it looks like so we know what it is.  I think you tend to remember better too if you see the face that is talking about things of interest.
Ray Wilson

After 10 weeks away in Europe do I not only find there's been a change in Prime Minister, but there's also no PC Guru on 6PR!!!!!!

Bring back PC Guru for the masses, or have it introduced to ABC 720, there is a need for your invaluable advice and assistance!!!!!!!!!
Giovanni Virgo

I REALLY wish you could get back onto 6pr with your guru segment as I listen to that station every day – such a shame that you had to quit.
Ronnie Harper

I SO miss you on 6PR.  I haven’t rescanned my channels yet to get Channel 44, but will do so soon.
Val Sheppard

I'm really interested in your comments.

Do you want Tech Talkback on the ABC? Do you want to see tech talkback like I did on @6PR but live on West TV each week?

FINAL UPDATE – 31 Twitterati going to The Black Diamond Ball!

What is The Black Diamond Ball?

It's a formal, but fun function to support Lifeline WA's HelpME campaign – a campaign designed to prevent suicide by increasing the community’s awareness of what we can do to keep people in crisis safe.

Black Diamond will take you on a journey for the senses from a decadent three course meal accompanied by premium beer and wine to mesmerising tailor-made live performances. From the reader to the art critic, the show-goer to the culinary enthusiast – not to mention those who just like to hit the dance floor – it will have you hooked on delight and entertainment from the moment you enter the realm of Black Diamond.

This is the Inaugural Black Diamond Ball where we'll be launching HelpMe, a remarkable initiative by Lifeline WA that aims to prevent suicide by addressing the stigma associated with mental illness and providing care to those in need.

My Passion – Talkback Radio

I asked Steve "Grumpy" Collins (Executive Producer to the Stars) to take a couple of shots this morning while I was doing Weekend Breakfast on 882 6PR.

Radio1

Radio2

I’m still not sure why I have such a passion for broadcasting – but it’s something that has been with me since 1989 when I got my first gig at 1080am – The Eagle.  Admittedly little more than a Cart Boy, there was something about radio that pressed my buttons.

I love the immediacy. I love the LIVE aspect of radio. It’s flying by the seat of your pants with so many things capable of going wrong. It really is an adrenalin rush.

I think talkback radio is especially challenging. You never know if you’re going to get callers – and if you do, you don’t know who they are (or if they are who they say they are). You never know what they’re going to say. The Dump Button is always in mind!

I look forward to the weekend shifts at 6PR – they leave me feeling like I’ve walked a tightrope and made it to the other side.

What’s your passion?

Show Closer!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2IkLGFiKx0

Had a few emails about the closing song for the Big Weekend today. Kinda surprising as I really did think everyone knew this one!

It’s Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson – I knew him so well.

If you enjoyed the Daggy Big Weekend – feel free to let the Program Director John Solvander know. His email is [email protected] 8-)

The Panel Guy

This Sunday just gone I paneled and presented simultaneously at 6PR. Doesn’t sound like much to those who have done it before, but it’s a big step for me!

It went pretty well. One screw-up but Peter soon helped me sort that out – and it probably wasn’t obvious to listeners. That’s a good thing as it would be pretty embarrassing to screw up when so many people are listening.

What I am finding a bit challenging – is to keep switched on verbally when trying to focus on the technical elements of getting the right buttons in the right order!

Next weekend is the big test. Sitting in for Tod Johnston on the “Big Weekend”. That’s 12pm-4pm Saturday and Sunday. Long shifts!

Still – I’m really looking forward to it!
