Deconstructing why it is these four chords are so irresistible to people seems to break down to something like this:
The root major chord sets your emotions up on a strong stable footing from which you make a noble rise to the perfect fifth, essentially heightening the feeling of the root chord . Then you shift upward again in pitch, but only slightly to the minor 6th, creating a bittersweet almost unbearable melancholic tension with a gentle release into the hopeful sound of the major 4th.
Plus everyone is a thief.
