People want Tech Talkback!

Posted by jas | Posted in Interesting, Radio, Recommendations, Technological, West TV | Posted on 09-08-2010

View Comments

Here's some excerpts from emails I've received since Friday 6 August. That's 19 emails in 3 days.

The people have spoken!

It seems they want someone who can solve technology problems on the radio as well as also doing something on TV.

Now of course, Ryan is doing a sterling job in my place on @6PR – but everyone has a different way of approaching problem solving. I'm pretty sure there's room for two.

Let's see if we can get @720perth interested!

What do you think? Add your comments below.

I must admit I miss your tech segments on 6PR. There are not many radio segments I try to take in as a matter of course, but yours was/is definitely one.  The 6PR talkback aspect was good coz it gave air to a wide range of problems, which I found good to learn from.

Whilst I am an Apple man, the rest of my family are Windows based, and I am the one who has to sort their problems for them. Coz of you, we are Trend based now….

Would definitely prefer a radio slot by you as it would be more practicable for me as compared to TV.  Thus assuming 6PR is finished for you now, I would think approaching the ABC for talkback would be the way to go, but not sure how commercial reality would affect your ability to recommend brands and stuff.
Rob McDonald

I support the idea of you conducting a full half hour and I mean a FULL HALF HOUR of both tech talk and talkback to people with problems or confusion about the operation of their pc's.

It would be a great deal better to have this segment on the radio during the working week and during working hours, the less than 15 minutes that James Lush gives you on a Sat morning is hardly worth it.

I am prepared to email this to the ABC and to West TV.
John Bryant

I would LOVE to see you back on radio and hope the ABC could see the value of this to their station and ratings, I use to look forward to your talkback shows and would gladly tune in to ABC radio for your show,,I do not normally tune into ABC radio but would do so if you where on it.
Cathy Warger

i think u should go for the phone in idea on west tv

Love to see a talk back on West TV, but would email 720 if needed.
Glennys Fragomeni

I would like to see a tech help session in any media. My own interest is in Linux variants and discussion on these would be especially welcomed by me.
Brian Steele

I really miss you on 6pr. Looking forward to having you on somthing on tv.
Brian Mitchell

I am still in shock that you left 6pr. You said that at the ABC, they would give you more freedom for exploring your radio image.

This, to me hasn't happened. I loved hearing your advice and your no-nonsense approach to tech issues.

I want you back in a regular spot, 6pr or ABC. Doesn't matter.

T.V. ?? On the weekend yes but during the week, were all at work and don't watch the box.

You have my full support for a twice weekly show during the week and a spot on the weekend.

The world is moving forward and to keep up, we have to know what there is to know and you always gave us that up to date advice.

We need you back. At all cost's. How about a live web-cam every weekend where we can log in and enjoy.
Gerrit Braun

In my opinion the best way to answer question and demonstrate visually on how to go about solving computer problems is via the TV programme.
John Delborrello

I would definately watch a TV show on computers, how to advice, new technology, problem solving and related issues .

There is nothing like it on TV and the format would be perfect for everyone who uses a computer or is interested in technology.

You could have an advice section via viewer emails, guest experts and a new product slot.

The only show like it would be 'Cybershack' but channel nine seems to put that show on and off air at their whim if it is still on the air at all.
J Fulton

I would like a TV Talkback Segment.
Cilla W.

My 2 cents. Definately include mobile technology in a tech talk segment. I'm not just talking Blackberry but rather all mobile internet, social networking and email.
Greg Myers

I’d prefer to hear you back on 6pr (and I’ve let them know too!)
I really miss your segments, very informative and interesting and I’ve learnt a lot listening to you!
Rhonda Gittos

A Tech Help segment should return to radio.
Robert Barham

I for one, would like a tech support show on the ABC, or where ever, I'm a bit of a Techie, and miss listening to you on air, I have picked  up a few skills from these shows.

I do think a show on channel 44 would work, just a matter of  getting people to rescan there TVs, so they at least have the channel, then get the word out that the show exists, the potential for such a show would be huge (well I believe so), hope it all works out, if I can help,I sure will……..
Rod Moss

I think it's a great idea having a Tech Help segment.  Even better to have it on TV so that when you are talking about something tangible like external drives, mother boards or ram and loads of other bits, you will be able to show us oldies what the hell it looks like so we know what it is.  I think you tend to remember better too if you see the face that is talking about things of interest.
Ray Wilson

After 10 weeks away in Europe do I not only find there's been a change in Prime Minister, but there's also no PC Guru on 6PR!!!!!!

Bring back PC Guru for the masses, or have it introduced to ABC 720, there is a need for your invaluable advice and assistance!!!!!!!!!
Giovanni Virgo

I REALLY wish you could get back onto 6pr with your guru segment as I listen to that station every day – such a shame that you had to quit.
Ronnie Harper

I SO miss you on 6PR.  I haven’t rescanned my channels yet to get Channel 44, but will do so soon.
Val Sheppard

I'm really interested in your comments.

Do you want Tech Talkback on the ABC? Do you want to see tech talkback like I did on @6PR but live on West TV each week?

Thought Leaders Testimonial – Jason Clarke is fantastic.

I went along to a Thought Leaders WA presentation by Jason Clarke – and it was fantastic. Jason is widely regarded as one of Australia's best speakers – and I can see why. It was thought-provoking, fun and made me challenge quite a few long held assumptions.

If you're in Perth and you can make the next one, I highly recommend it.

Enjoy this testimonial produced by those devilishly handsome blokes at LushTV.

TV Show Proposal: Got My Vote

Posted by jas | Posted in Polls, Recommendations, Television | Posted on 17-06-2010

View Comments

I figured I might as well document it here and see how people feel about it.

Proposed Name: Got My Vote
Proposed Website: www.gotmyvote.com

Pitch:
A Panel of up to 6 relevant people with Anchor and Studio Audience ala ABC's "Q&A" but with live webcam, skype, twitter, telephone, studio & viewing audience participation.

The fundamental difference being a web-based live voting system for all viewers where "The Worm" is live on the screen throughout the entire show. This will of course require registration to reduce the effect of "gaming the worm".

It's "The Worm" that gives rise to the name of the production "Got My Vote". Everything discussed on the show will be judged by the audience. I like to think of it as "Talkback Radio with Pictures".

The first truly democratic television production where viewers can actively participate by influencing the overall direction of the worm in real time.

This is particularly well suited to Community TV and would also foster an active audience who could participate through the week at the gotmyvote.com forum.

My Telstra HTC Desire Review

Posted by jas | Posted in Interesting, Rants, Recommendations, Technological | Posted on 25-05-2010

View Comments

In a grand experiment, Telstra gave me and 24 others a HTC Desire to review with absolutely no requirement for us to say anything nice about it. It's a brave & clever initiative that leverages the vast world of social media and those who are considered "influential".

I was fortunate to be selected and whilst I feel a little bad about sledging something I was given for free, the deal was for us all to be completely honest about our experiences. So that's what you're going to get.

Lets get it started.

I’ve been both pleasantly surprised and horribly disappointed by the phone – and unfortunately my disappointment is little to do with HTC and mostly due to Telstra.

The screen, camera, speed and functionality of the phone is awesome. I use it in an Enterprise environment and the Exchange connectivity has been terrific – email, calendar, contacts – they just work as they should. The social media functionality is great, I’ve been happily twittering and facebooking with no headaches. The multitasking makes me smile every time I think of it. It just stomps all over the iPhone.

The reception is beyond what I expect of a phone. Places I’ve always known as dead spots now work perfectly. The Wi-Fi and Bluetooth both have an extraordinary range and for me, the battery life has been acceptable even with everything including GPS switched on. It easily gives me 16 hours and that’s all I need.

HTC Desire

The HTC Sense interface works well enough. I love the concept of home screen widgets – but I do have an issue with the drawdown bar at the top of the screen being too small – it's ok once you get used to it. That said, the digital clock and weather being on the front face is very pretty indeed. The Live backgrounds are unnecessary but fun and a nice reminder you're using a powerful device.

I also cannot fault the Next-G network. The speed is magnificent, YouTube plays with no buffering and I’ve surfed websites like being in front my desktop PC. The pinch screen gestures allow you to zoom in and out and the auto-sense for phone orientation means you can spin the phone to automatically make web pages more legible.

But then there’s the negatives.

This phone runs Android. Android is cool because it’s open source and customisable. Or at least it was until Telstra got its hands on it.

They’ve managed to change one of the primary selling points of this phone by making it such that Telstra's applications simply cannot be removed. And even more frustratingly, they’re applications that simply don’t work on Wi-Fi – they can only be used on the Next-G network.

I don’t mind Telstra whacking their logo on the back of my phone. I don’t care that they badge my boot screen, but I do care very much when they install applications that I cannot remove. Especially when they’re totally lame things like “Send a Card” and “Sport”. To make it even more facepalmworthy, they've even named some of their apps the same thing as much more functional tools… so you can only tell them apart by icon.

It also appears that I cannot "root" my own phone so I can install my own ROMS. Unlike every other Android phone on the market, I cannot modify my phone to be what I want and need it to be.

It's enough to send a Geek like me into a total Nerd Rage.

Normally when I get a new device, I learn about it, discover the pros and cons and find myself using it in spite of whatever shortcomings it has. You can usually work around things… but removing the ability to modify my UI experience leaves me frustrated, angry and disappointed.

So would I recommend this phone to others? Yes. Wholeheartedly. But with a caveat.

I would only recommend it to non-technical folk. And I suspect that’s not really the market this phone is aimed at.

I cannot recommend the Telstra HTC Desire to anyone with any kind of technical ability because frankly, Telstra did it their way with no respect whatsoever for the end-user experience.

So I now reach out to you Telstra. Release a ROM for the phone that allows us to return to the core of the Android experience. Allow HTC to deliver a non-Telstra branded HTC Desire ROM. You don't have to push it on everyone, but make it available for those of us who know what we want.

It's such a shame. It's a truly great phone on a truly great mobile network.

But I think the Marketing Goons have ruined it for everyone.
